I was looking at a post on Instagram the other day of a mother with her daughter. It was a beautiful picture of the two of them together.
But, what caught my eye was not the picture so much as what the message said. It read, “ thank you for making me a mother and thank you for making me whole.”
Being a mother is amazing and comes with a lot of purpose. But, it DOES NOT make us whole. The only one we are whole in, is in Jesus Christ.
There’s a lot of misguided life purpose and direction out there for people, for all of us. People believe that their husband, wife, children, job, success, or money can make them whole. But this is where idolatry begins and ends.
What do I mean by idolatry? It is anything that you love more than God, or anything that you give more value or honor to than worshiping and glorifying God.
I am guilty of idolatry myself. I spent much of my adult life searching for a man to marry and to fill up my holes. Because of abandonment issues as a child, I was looking to find love (wholeness) from a man. But they (the men, my husband) never did or could fill these holes for me. They were never meant to.
Only God can fill up your holes to make you whole in Him.
Who am I? This is the age old question everyone is trying to answer and has been trying to answer for thousands of years. Who am I, and what am I doing here on this planet?
Well, believe it or not I’ve got an answer for you. Really, it’s God’s answer for you, not mine.
- Who are you?
You were created in GOD’ S IMAGE to reflect Him.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them“ (Genesis 1:27 ESV).
“Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” (Colossians 3:9-10 ESV).
As Christians, we reflect God’s image to the world and put on the new self which is a life that is centered on Jesus Christ. A life that does its best to put off sin, and put on a new self that represents a righteous life—the life of a saint.
- Why am I here?
You were created to GLORIFY GOD with your life and to spread the gospel around the world.
“ So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV).
“ And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation’” (Mark 16:15 ESV).
In whatever we do, in every action, at our jobs, at home with our families, we are to glorify God. Are we perfect? No, but we have God’s grace and forgiveness to continually help us to do this.
Whether you like it or not, your purpose isn’t to just find what makes you happy. I do believe that God wants us to be happy because he loves us so much. But, that’s not God’s main purpose. He wants us to live a life that glorifies Him, a life that obeys Him. And He wants us to share the message of the gospel throughout the world.
And in doing these things, by using the gifts and talents that He has given us to glorify Him, by living in His image, by seeking His peace, we will hopefully find happiness also.
I hope you join me on this amazing journey— a thing called life, each day finding ways to glorify our great God!
Be Blessed,
AllisonD
